Metal Primer Spray FAQ
What’s the best primer spray for metal?
The best primer spray to use for metal is the primer made by the same company that makes the spray paint you use. For example, if your painting metal with Montana Spray Paint, then the Montana Primer is the best as it’s made to use in conjunction with Montana spray paint.
This doesn’t mean you can’t use different makes of primer with different makes of spray paint. You can use a different make in most cases, but it isn’t optimal, as paint manufacturers always make sure their spray paint works with their primers. Always use matching primer and spray paint made by the same manufacturer for the best results.
Do you need to prime metal before spraying?
Bare metal must always be primed (unless the paint is a primer and paint in one) otherwise. The spray paint won’t stick to the surface properly. If the metal is already painted, you won’t need a primer, but it’s advisable to sand and use a spray undercoat before spray painting.
Can you spray primer on bare metal?
Yes, the spray primers listed can be sprayed onto bare metal. Ensure the surface is dry and free from rust, grease and dirt. Clean the metal surface with a wire brush and degreaser if necessary.
What colour is spray primer?
The majority of spray primers are white and spray paint colours finish well when sprayed on top of a white surface. Grey and Black spray primers are available for use with the darkest of colours. The undercoat should always be lighter than the topcoat.
